The AL Central leading Minnesota Twins will take on the New York Yankees in game two of a three-game series on Wednesday at Target Field.
Game two will begin after the completion of Tuesday’s series opener that was suspended due to rain after five scoreless innings.
The bullpens will take over in game one of the doubleheader replacing New York’s A.J. Burnett and Minnesota’s Scott Baker, each who allowed three hits before the game was halted. The Twins will send lefty Brian Duensing to the mound. New York did not reveal their plans for who would take over for Burnett.
The Yankees won all 10 matchups with the Twins last season, and took the first two games of a series less than two weeks ago. Minnesota finally ended its woes against New York in dramatic fashion with a 6-3 victory on May 16.
The Yankees have lost 10 of 15 overall after losing two of three on the road against the Mets over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Twins have not lost a series in their new home, going 14-7 after winning two of three from Milwaukee. AL batting leader Justin Morneau is hitting .411 with five straight multi-hit efforts at Target Field.
For game two the Yankees will start veteran southpaw Andy Pettitte. The 38-year old is showing no signs of slowing down. He has allowed less than two earned runs in five of his eight outings this season. The Rays bombed him on Thursday, earning his first loss of the season. He pitched five innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits, including three home runs. He walked two and struck out three. Pettitte had given up one run in 11 1/3 innings over his previous two starts. He’s 10-5 with a 3.53 ERA in his career against the Twins
Minnesota will counter with lefty Francisco Liriano who lost his third straight start on Thursday after winning his first four decisions of the season. He pitched 4 2/3 innings against the Red Sox, yielding five earned runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs. He walked three while striking out six. Liriano has given up five earned runs in two of his last three outings. The 26-year old has gone from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde this month. After allowing just three earned runs in four April starts, he’s now given up 16 in four May outings. He 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA in his career against the Yankees.
The odds makers have the Yankees as –1-½ – favorites with a run total of 8 ½.
I expect the Twins to continue their hot streak taking it to the New York in game two and the UNDER.
