Its Sunday Night Baseball, New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox, August, and both teams are tied at the top of the American League. ESPN may have truly made a deal with the devil. The Yankees have really struggled against Boston all season long and will be looking for a measure of strength and intimidation as they try and win this important series. Yesterday the Red Sox jumped all over starter C.C. Sabathia but perhaps tonight’s starter Freddy Garcia can turn back the clock to 200? in this critical game. He certainly won’t wilt under the lights and he has won his last three starts. However, the veteran righthander has lost to Boston tin his previous two starts against them this season. He will definitely need support from the lumber if the Yankees are to pull out the victory.
The Red Sox just pounded Sabathia yesterday, something nobody has done in a long while. Their lineup is stacked from top to bottom and if Carl Crawford is finally getting right (4 for 4 yesterday) than they are pretty scary, especially when they get quality starting pitching (not always a given). Speaking of that, tonight’s starter Josh Beckett has been a revelation this season, especially at home where he carries an impressive 1.99 ERA. Even better than the overall numbers though, has been his success against the Yankees. He is 3-0 against the Bronx Bombers this season and the Red Sox have won 5 of his last 6 decisions against the Evil Empire. It would have been great for fans if he dealt against Sabathia yesterday but either way he clearly gives Boston an edge tonight.
Prediction: Garcia will battle but I just can’t see him outpitching or outlasting Beckett tonight. Hopefully they get this one in with rains up and down the east coast. Although it would be interesting if they have to reschedule give the relationship between these teams.
