The nastiest rivalry in baseball, and perhaps in all of sports, renews again this weekend as the Boston Red Sox play host to the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. The Red Sox finally got off the schneid by defeating the Yankees on Friday afternoon in their home opener.
Ivan Nova will get the start for the Pinstripes, looking to build on his first start when he went six innings and earned victory against Minnesota. The Sox will counter with Clay Buchholz, who will try to even his record at 1-1 after surrendering four homers in a loss last weekend to Texas.
Carl Crawford is one of the two new Red Sox regular players. On Friday, manager Terry Francona moved him to the top spot in the batting order. The rest of the lineup seemed to benefit from this despite his taking the collar in five at-bats. Dustin Pedroia looked like the player that won the 2009 MVP award going 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored. The other new player in the lineup for Boston is former San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. He leads the Sox with nine hits and six RBI while hitting .321.
Boston fans also have to be pleased with what David Ortiz has provided in the DH spot so far, going 7-for-26 on the young campaign with two homers and 14 total bases. JD Drew is also starting to come around, going 2-for-4 in Friday’s victory.
The Bronx Bombers are just 4-3 early in the season. What do you know – Robinson Cano is off to a solid start for the Yanks. He’s 8-for-29 so far this season with three doubles, a home run, and 4 RBIs. Another player the Yankees need a huge bounce back season from is first baseman Mark Teixeira, and he has four homers and 10 RBI on the young season for the Yankees.
Of course, you can’t talk about the Yankees without mentioning Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. A-Rod is 7-for-23 this season with three homers and just five RBI. Jeter is 6-for-26 with just four runs scored and only six walks.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Red Sox – Buchholz is a much better pitcher than he showed in his first outing of the season, and figures to neutralize the big bats of the Yankees. Getting the victory will take some pressure off the Red Sox, but because it’s the Yankees, they won’t relax.
