Pitching Probables: A.J. Burnett vs. C.J. Wilson

This is just the second series between these teams this year. In April the Yankees swept the Rangers but that was before anyone, including Texas, thought they would be any good. The Yankees outscored Texas 17-7 over the the three game set and tonight’s starter A.J. Burnett pitched seven innings of shutout ball – one of his best outings of the season. More recently, after two straight starts where he gave up no runs, Burnett was hammered for eight runs by his old teammates, the Blue Jays. When he is on Burnett can be as good as anybody in the league. Period. The Yankees are looking to build bounce back after yesterday’s loss to Boston – odds are they will as they are 30-14 after a loss this season. They also may want to prove they are the top dog in the American League and that all this talk about the Rangers and Cliff Lee is just that, talk.

The Rangers definitely want to show they are not intimidated by the “pinstripes” especially since there is a good possibility they could wind up facing each other come October. Unfortunately C.J. Wilson may not be the right guy for that task. His numbers are solid but he has never beaten the Yankees in three starts against them. He also might be tiring. In his last start he didn’t make it out of the fourth against the Mariners (of all teams). He was walking betters left and right and you can bet the Yankees with their patient approach will force him to pitch to them. Still, Wilson is one of many Rangers enjoying fantastic seasons. Josh Hamilton is batting .355 and if Wilson struggles the Rangers can certainly try and out slug the Yankees.

Prediction: A slugfest is exactly what I see here. Sorry Wilson and Burnett but you will not be around when this one is decided

Rangers are -135 in this one and the O/U is set at 9.5
