The Yankees started the fireworks early this holiday weekend with three runs in the first inning of Friday night’s game on their way to a 5-1 victory as a 105 road favorite. The total stayed ‘under’ the 8.5-run line. It was their sixth straight win heading into Saturday’s game and they are now an AL-best 49-31 and 2.5 games in front of Boston in the AL East. New York is 28-18 at home and 21-13 on the road.
Mark Teixeira knocked in two runs in Friday night’s win and now has a team-high 65 RBI on the year. The five runs scored gives New York a MLB-high 426. Freddy Garcia is slated to get the start for the Yankees in the series finale. He is 7-6 this season with a 3.28 ERA. This past Tuesday against Milwaukee, he gave up two runs on eight hits in six innings of work to get the win.
The Mets are now an even 41-41 on the year after losing their last two and have fallen 10.5 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. New York is 23-20 on the road this season but have struggled at Citi Field with an 18-21 record at home.
New York’s lineup pounded out 54 runs in its last five games of the month of June, but ground to a halt against the Yankees on Friday night. Carlos Beltran leads the team with 54 RBI and 12 home runs and leadoff batter Jose Reyes has 32 RBI and a MLB-high 123 hits.
R.A. Dickey is scheduled to be on the mound for the Mets on Sunday. He is 4-7 overall this season with a 3.77 ERA. Earlier this year, he held the Yankees to just one earned run on four hits in six innings to pick up the win.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
Prediction: Head-to-head, the Yankees have now won three out of four games this season heading into Saturday’s game after taking two of three at home in late May. Stick with the Bronx Bombers in this one as they come away with another Subway Series win.
