In the meantime, the Yankees who now own the AL’s best record will look to extend their longest winning streak of the season when they roll into Citi Field, winning 15 of their last 19, putting them 2 1/2 games up in the East.
It’s been an impressive run for the Bronx Bombers who less than just a month ago relinquished the AL East lead after dropping all three meetings with the Boston Red Sox, falling two games behind the their arch-rival in the division race.
The streak continued with Thursday’s 5-0 victory over Milwaukee, giving the Yankees a five-game winning streak while outscoring opponents 36-11 over the same span.
Bartolo Colon (5-3, 3.10 ERA) will toe the rubber in Game 2, and will attempt to keep the Yanks streak alive. The right-hander, who will return to the rotation after spending nearly three weeks on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, is 3-1 against the Mets in four career starts with an ERA 3.46.
However, this time, he’ll face a Mets lineup that came into the series hitting .385 with five homers and 54 runs in five games, including 10 hits in a 5-2 loss at Detroit on Thursday, as their four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end.
Shortstop Jose Reyes has been on fire, going 14 for 24 with nine runs in the past five games. His .352 average ties him with the Red Sox’s Adrian Gonzalez for tops in baseball and is 61 points higher than his career mark.
Meanwhile, the Yankees have also been laying down the lumber, and third baseman Alex Rodriguez leads the club hitting .440 with one homer and 11 RBIs in 13 interleague games this season.
The Bombers disseminated the Mets pitching in the last meeting, with A-Rod going 7 for 13 with seven runs, while slugger Mark Teixeira posted four homers in his last four hits versus the Mets.
The strapping first baseman has sent four of his last five hits into the stands in his last five plate appearances, including the 300th of his career on Thursday. He’s driven in eight runs in that stretch and has registered 25 homers and 63 RBIs despite a career-low .243 batting average.
Manager Terry Collins will hand the ball to 24-year old Dillon Gee (8-1) who recovered from a shaky start in the follow-up to his only loss of the season, allowing three runs and eight hits with two walks while striking out seven in 5 2-3 innings of a 14-5 win at Texas last weekend.
The left-hander is 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA in his last six starts and will be making his Subway series debut on Saturday.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Yankees– Although both teams are hitting well, this game will come down to pitching, and Gee is a kid about to be thrust into a lion’s den. I also believe the Mets might have used up a year’s worth of hits over the last week, while the Yanks are just warming up.
