The Yanks lost two of three to Chicago in its last visit to Wrigley, but were hoping for a reversal in this trip, even with slugger shortstop Derek Jeter missing from the lineup.
Despite the loss of Jeter, the boys in pinstripes have enjoyed baseball’s most prolific offense over the last seven days, scoring 51 runs while batting .336 with 13 HRs and a .570 slugging percentage in its last seven games.
Coming into the series, Curtis Granderson was 13 for 29 with three homers, nine RBIs and 11 runs in that span, but went 0-4 in Game 1. Meanwhile, Brett Gardner who was 12 for 23 with three RBIs and six runs, went 1-3 with a walk.
Even Mark Teixeira, who homered three times and drove in six runs in a three-game sweep of Texas, was held in check, but did drive home the Yankees only run in the eighth, finishing the game 1-for-3 with a walk and a single RBI.
Yankees’ skipper Joe Girardi will start AJ Burnett (6-5, 4.09 ERA) in Game 2. Burnett is 4-3 with a 4.21 ERA in four career starts against the Cubs.
Burnett allowed one run, five hits and struck out eight over 7 2-3 innings but was tagged with the loss during Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Cleveland, but showed improvement over his previous outing, during which he allowed a season-worst eight runs – seven earned – during an 11-6 loss to
Boston. Despite his loss to the Tribe, the right-hander has allowed two runs or less in three of his last four starts.
Meanwhile, the Cubbies ended a run of losing five straight series by winning three of four from Milwaukee.
Kosuke Fukudome, who fell a double shy of the cycle, singling in the first inning, tripling home a run in the second, and hitting a three-run home run in the sixth in Thursday’s 12-7 victory. Went just 1-3 with a walk in Friday’s contest.
However, the speedy right fielder did come around to score on Starlin Castro’s double, before Castro touched the dish on Aramis Ramirez’s RBI single that gave Chicago a 2-0 lead at the end of one. Ramirez tacked on another with an RBI in the third.
It was a solid effort by a lineup who was only 15-20 in their own park before Friday’s win.
The Cubs will go with veteran Ryan Dempster on the mound in Game 2. Dempster is 4-2 with a 3.21 ERA in his last nine starts. The righty worked seven innings, gave up four hits while striking out seven and walking just one in Monday’s 1-0 win over Milwaukee.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.5.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Yankees– After being embarrassed in their three-game sweep by Boston, the Yankees endured a series of roster changes yet rebounded over the remainder of a 10-game homestand, claiming six victories in seven games. They continue to receive unexpected contributions from replacement parts and while they struggled in Game 1, I expect Game 2 to go to New York, behind solid performance from Burnett.
