The Angels got off to a slow start but used a sweep of the Jays as part of a 5 game winning streak to get them back in the early race in the AL West.  This team has turned over quite a few positions this season and is getting good production from new faces Hideki Matsui and Joel Pineiro.  Pineiro enters today’s contest with a 2-1 record despite a fantastic ERA of 1.77.  The key has been keeping the free passes at a minimum, only three in three starts thus far.  This will be put to the test against the Yankees who are second in the majors in OBP.  Historically Pineiro has fared fairly well against the Yankees with a 3-3 record but none of those games were with the Angels.  He has been especially sharp against Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez who are a combined 11 for 60, a .183 average.  The Angels have some momentum coming off of their series opening victory last night 6-4 in which they won the game late against Joba Chamberlain. Brian Fuentes earned his second save of the season.  He has pitched in 2 of the last three games and may not be available this afternoon given that he is still recently off the injured list.  This could be a factor if the game is tight late.

The Yankees are battling the Rays for early AL East supremacy early on.  They are averaging over 5 runs a games and are getting production from the usual sources with the exception of Mark Teixeira who is off to a miserable start.  Lefty swinging Nick Johnson is in the same boat as both are hitting well below their weight.  The only Yankee who has had career success against Pineiro is their leading hitter and surprising leading slugger this year Robinson Cano.  It doesn’t get much better on the mound for the Yankees in this one.  Andy Pettitte has racked up many wins in his career but is only 13-10 against the Angels, one of only three team to have beaten him ten times or more.  Within those totals are a sub .500 record and Angels stadium.  No one particular Angel has caused him problems but this team just doesn’t appear to be phased by him or the Yankee mystique.

The Play: MLB wagering is all about spotting good value and this is a good spot to play the underdog Angels.  There are a lot of favourable historical individual matchups and the payoff at 2.08 is good value.  The Angels won’t be underdogs at home too often this season.  This could be the time to cash in.
