Little has stood in the way of the Texas Rangers this season but they are limping into the Bronx with a two game losing streak. Along with the fast start they have been losing players left and right, most recently slugging outfielder Josh Hamilton who looks to be out a couple of months with a broken arm (how come he is the only one who didn’t know you don’t slide into home head first). Their lineup is still plenty potent but it is going to be even more critical that they continue to get high quality pitching. Starter Matt Harrison has been providing just that with a perfect record through two starts and a sparkling ERA of 1.29 – It makes it easier when your hitters are backing you up to the tune of 9 runs per game. Harrison has just two starts in his career against the Yankees, one good the other not so much. Pitching in the Bronx is always a challenge and Texas needs him to respond in the series opener.
The Yankees won last night, surviving another poor performance from starter Philip Hughes. They are 7-4 so far and have been lucky to escape what had been a horror show for Hughes with a 1-2 record. On the opposite side of the spectrum Ivan Nova has been pitching poorly and winning. New York is 2-0 in his starts this season despite an ERA on the north side of 6 for the rookie. He has been getting very good run support but needs to start working deeper into games or else the Yankees will need to look in other directions. With Hughes getting shelled they need even more out of their other starters. The Yankees will be looking to avenge their dismissal from last year’s playoffs courtesy of the Rangers in this one. Not facing Cliff Lee this time around will help.
