The Cardinals took the opener of the season series against the rival Cubs on Tuesday night behind Chris Carpenter’s first victory of the season. Albert Pujols collected 4 hits as his average slowly but surely creeps back to expected norms but nothing else stood out from the opener. Tonight it is Jake Westbrook’s turn to continue St. Louis’ winning ways. He was awful to start the year but has two wins to his credit. He was surprisingly strong the last time out in a no decision against the Marlins, striking out 8 in 6 innings and is on a run of three straight quality starts so maybe he just needed some more innings under his belt to get going. He is still walking too many but the Cubs are not the most patient team in the league. He is a veteran who battles his way through each game.
The Chicago Cubs look to get back into the win column behind their new ace starter Matt Garza. The former Ray and Twin may only have one victory to his credit this season but he is striking out nearly 12 batters per nine innings in his first go around the National League. His ERA isn’t great (because his hit rate has been high) but he would surely have another couple of wins if the Cubbies would give him some support – they are averaging a scant 2.3 runs when he takes the hill. The Cubs are a very frustrating team right now (I guess always to be honest) as they can’t seem to get more than one player going at a time, pitching or hitting. There is talent on this team but you can not back them with any confidence the way they are playing.
The odds makers have the Chicago Cubs as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
