For starters let’s just hope they get this series among National League division leaders in with all the rain on the East Coast these days. If they do the Colorado Rockies will be coming to the City of Brotherly love with confidence after two come from behind victories over the San Francisco Giants. Lefty starter Jorge De La Rosa takes the hill and for most of the season he has been harnessing his impressive arsenal. He leads the staff in victories and strikeouts but this might not be a pleasant spot for him though as the Phillies have hammered him during his career (0-3 ERA over 9). Those numbers are even worse at Citizens Bank Park (ERA over 14). Given that track record and the fact that the Phillies are hungry for a victory right now to snap their funk ,it is hard to get excited about the always underappreciated Rockies for this one.
The Philadelphia Phillies have lost 4 in a row and have seen their division lead dwindle to just a half game over the Florida Marlins. As expected they have been getting great pitching (they have given up just 13 runs during their 4 game skid) but the bats have been inconsistent with outfielders Raul Ibanez and Ben Fransisco really slumping badly. As a result it will be up to starter Cole Hamels to halt the losing streak. While overshadowed by Roy Halladay, Hamels has been very sharp this season averaging more than a strikeout per inning while significantly improving his walk rate. Hamels has just one career start against the Rox and it was disastrous but that was back in 2009, his worst season in the majors. I expect a better outing this evening.
Prediction: Phillies right the ship in a rain soaked low scoring affair. Feels like another game where a blast from Ryan Howard is the difference.
Score Prediction: Philadelphia – 3 / Colorado – 1
