The Colorado Rockies have definitely been a surprise team this year – on the negative side. With the trade of pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez to the Cleveland Indians they declared this season a lost cause and are just playing out the string, trying to spoil others’ seasons. These teams have swapped 6-1 victories over the the first two games of this series and that just happens to be the record of the Rox when starter Esmil Rogers takes the Hill. Rogers’ numbers are not very good but that won-loss record includes a perfect 5-0 record on the road and the high ERA is a result of a game in which he got absolutely pounded by the Giants back in April (with only 40 innings to his credit all season it didn’t take much to balloon his ERA). Since returning from the minors he has been better but not dominant.

The St. Louis Cardinals are slowly but surely losing ground to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. There is only so much time left to the season so they need to starting winning series and it would definitely help if they were getting more from their deadline acquisition of tonight’s starter, Edwin Jackson. While sharp in his debut as a Cardinal the last two starts have been losing efforts, both to Milwaukee to make things worse. It was a gamble grabbing a pitcher who moves around as much as Jackson does and so far it had not paid off. For what it is worth Jackson was hammered in his last start against Colorado. That was last year as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The odds makers have the St. Louis Cardinals as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
Prediction: The Rox will help the Brewers by taking the finale of their series behind Rogers. They find a way to win when he is on the mound, the exact opposite of Jackson’s experience.
Score Prediction: Colorado Rockies – 6, St. Louis Cardinals – 5
