Two teams hoping to stay with St. Louis in the National League Central Division, square off this weekend at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs host the Cincinnati Reds, Saturday, in the second game of a three-game series.
The Reds enter the weekend one game above .500 and in second place in the NL Central, just 1½ games behind the Cardinals. They will send Bronson Arroyo to the mound on Saturday.
Arroyo has a 3-3 mark on the season with a 4.17 ERA on the season. He went seven innings in his last start but took the loss, allowing five earned runs. If the wind is blowing out, Arroyo will need to keep the ball down, as he has already surrendered seven home runs in just 36 2/3 innings so far this season. In his career against the Cubs, the right-hander is 9-7 with a 2.80 ERA in 20 appearances.
The Cubbies are coming off a series in which they took two of three from the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and enter play this weekend at 14-16 and three games behind the Cards.
Casey Coleman will take the ball Saturday for the Cubs. He is just 1-2 with an ERA of 7.36 in only 18 1/3 innings of work. The Cubs would like to see the righty or someone on their starting staff begin to match the output of Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs ace is 4-1 on the season, while the rest of the starters are a combined 3-8.
Alfonso Soriano may be hitting in the seventh spot in the batting order for new manager Mike Quade, but so far it’s working. Soriano leads the majors in home runs with 11, and he has produced 21 RBIs. Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro may not yet be household names around the country, but they have been pleasant surprises so far for the ‘Northsiders’. Barney is the starting second baseman and hitting .324, while shortstop Castro is hitting .313 and has four steals. They have combined to score 34 runs.
For the Reds, last year’s MVP Joey Votto has picked up this season where he left off last season. He is hitting .351 with five homers and 17 RBIs. Outfielder Jay Bruce is also off to a great start, with a club-high six home runs and 15 RBI.
The odds makers have the Cincinnati Reds as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
