The season is 101 games old, and the Red Sox are neck-and-neck with the Yankees atop the AL East standings.
Boston’s offense is the best in the league by far, leading the majors in nearly every offensive category. They are first in runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
First-baseman Adrian Gonzalez is on fire at the moment, and is leading the Red Sox in hits, RBIs and on-base percentage. But Gonzalez is not alone, as the team is currently receiving contributions from numerous hitters up and down the lineup.
Now Boston will face its toughest challenge in a young August campaign, going up against the leagues second best offense statistically in New York, so you could expect a fair amount of runs in this matchup. Possibly good enough to take the over.
However, this game will still be won and lost on the mound, and both teams will field great pitchers that have been in this type of situation before.
For New York, they will want to slow down Boston’s offensive punch and towing the rubber in Game 2 will be star left-handed hurler, CC Sabathia.
Sabathia (16-5) is having one of the best years of his career throwing for a 2.55 ERA and 162 strikeouts. He is perhaps the hottest pitcher in the majors at the moment, and in his last game he went eight innings, allowing only two hits on 10 runs.
Sabathia, though, hasn’t been as successful again the BoSox this season, and his ERA jumps to 6.16 against the team’s most hated rival.
Boston will counter, calling on right-hander John Lackey. The lofty fast-baller (9-8) is having a rough year so far in 2011, allowing an ERA of 6.23 and just 71 strikeouts. Fortunately for Lackey, he has the league’s best offense behind him, and one of the strongest defenses in the outfield.
The odds makers have the Boston Red Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.
Matt’s Free Prediction: New York – The only advantage that either team has is New York’s pitcher. They will field their best, and Boston will put Lackey on the mound, who has been rather disappointing this season. I don’t see the Red Sox beating up on Sabathia during his hot streak, and I expect this game to be a 6-5 win in favor of the Yankees.
