Even though neither team enters this weekend’s series in the ‘House that Ruth built’ atop the AL East Division, they are both well within striking distance at this early stage of the season. The Bronx Bombers enter play on Friday three games over .500 and just one game out of the top spot in the division. The boys from Boston are three under .500 and five games back of first place Tampa Bay.
As pitching match-ups go, the potential showdown between Josh Beckett and CC Sabathia is as good as it gets. Beckett seems to be all the way back from arm issues that have plagued him in recent seasons. He is 2-1 with a 1.99 ERA in seven starts this season. One of those wins was an eight inning, no runs and ten strikeouts performance against the Yankees back in April. Beckett has had four consecutive no decisions overall this season, and in his career against New York he is 11-7.
Sabathia comes into the contest with a 3-2 record overall this season and an ERA of 2.89. He lost his only prior start this season against the team from New England, being removed after allowing just one earned run over 5 2/3 innings. In his career, Sabathia has posted a 6-6 mark with a 3.35 ERA in 16 starts against Boston.
Boston certainly has to be thrilled with how well Adrian Gonzalez has played so far this season. Acquired from San Diego in the off-season, the All-Star first baseman leads the Red Sox in batting average (.329), hits (50), home runs (7), RBI (29), doubles (13), and is tied for the lead in runs scored (23).
The Yankees have Derek Jeter trying to beat back father time, and he has raised his average lately to .270. Certainly, the choice for early season MVP of the Yanks is outfielder Curtis Granderson. He leads the club with 12 home runs, 25 runs scored, and tied with Robinson Cano for the club lead in RBI with 25. Cano has also bombed nine homers for New York.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Yankees – Beckett has been brilliant lately, but he hasn’t faced a lineup as good as the Yankee lineup in this stretch. They are always a solid pick at home.
