A very possible first round playoff preview this week between the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers.  Last night Boston won, breaking a string of 5 straight losses to the Rangers going back to last season.  The offense exploded led by a two homer night from first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.  Tonight they might not need as much offense with Josh Becket on the hill.  His dominance has waned throughout the season but the Red Sox have still won 7 of the last 10 times he took the hill.  He has not had much success in his career against Texas but hasn’t faced them yet this season.  For what it is worth Boston is 8-1 in its last 9 Wednesday games.

Texas Rangers starter Matt Harrison has been sneaking below the radar in the AL.  Rookie Alexi Ogando has been getting the pub when they look at the Rangers rotation but Harrison has the better ERA and has been more consistent overall throughout the season – the Rangers are 15-9 when he starts.  The lefty will be looking to tame one of the best lineups in the league. I thought that the Red Sox might struggle against lefties with guys like Gonzalez, David Ortiz and Carl Crawford all hitting from that side but that is not the case – unfortunately for Harrison who will be looking to reprise his last start against the Red Sox.  In April he beat them giving up just a single run over 7 innings while striking out 8.

The odds makers have the Boston Red Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.

Prediction:  Which will prevail offense or defense?  I say offense tonight and feel more comfortable betting the over than choosing a side.
