A battle between the two most disappointing teams of 2011 continues in Boston tonight. Pitching for the Rays is ace David Price. He is 0-2 with an ERA approaching 5 but he is not going to win many games backed by an offense that has provided only two runs of support for him. Yesterday the Rays broke out scoring 16 runs against the Sox but it is hard to say whether that signals better things to come or whether it is merely the Matsuzaka effect. Either way the Rays will be looking for the hot hitting of outfielder Sam Fuld to continue. The non-prospect (he is 30 ) was a single short of the cycle last night and has been hungry on the basepaths too (5 SBs). Hopefully he can disrupt the rhythm of Jon Lester who is a very sharp 9-3 against Tampa in his career.
Even more than Tampa, the Boston Red Sox have to be disappointed with their performance to date. This team is dead last in the majors in ERA right now, more than a run and a half worse than the next worst team at 7.29. Many thought that the lineup would have to carry this squad but they aren’t fairing much better with a collective .237 batting average. The Red Sox were always considered to be a smart team that spent its money wisely but their investment in Carl Crawford is not looking that shrewd as they drag him all over the lineup. He cranked out a couple of hits yesterday in the leadoff spot so maybe that is where he will stay as the Red Sox attempt to get back into the race in the AL East.
The odds makers have the Boston Red Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.

Prediction: I like Boston to rebound in this possible pitcher’s duel. Lester gives me way more confidence than Price right now.
