Philadelphia broke open a close game on Tuesday night with a nine-run eighth inning rally on its way to a 10-2 victory as a 164 road favorite. It was the Phillies eight win in their last 10 games and they are now an MLB-best 46-28 on the year; 4.5 games ahead of Atlanta in the NL East. They are 28-12 at home and 18-16 on the road.
Ryan Howard added to his team-high 59 RBI in the late game scoring outburst and Philadelphia moved into sixth-place in the NL in scoring with 309 total runs. Cliff Lee will get the start for the Phillies tonight. The left-hander is 7-5 this season with a 3.12 ERA, but has been especially impressive in his last three starts; giving up just one earned run in 24 innings pitched.
St. Louis is now 0-1 without Albert Pujols after the All-Star first baseman broke a bone in his forearm in Sunday’s 5-4 win over Kansas City. He is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, leaving a huge hole in a lineup that was ranked first in the NL in hitting and second in runs scored.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to 40-34 overall; 20-20 on the road and 20-14 at home. This was their eighth loss in their last 10 games and they now trail Milwaukee by half a game in the NL Central.
Kyle Lohse will be on the mound tonight for St. Louis. He has struggled a bit as of late; giving up 12 earned runs on 23 hits in 16.2 innings of work. He is 7-3 overall this season with an ERA of 2.88.
Head-to-head, the Cardinals won two previous games at home this season including a 3-1 win over Lee as a 133 home underdog. Both of those games stayed ‘under’ the total, while last night’s went way ‘over’ the 7.5 line.
The odds makers have the Philadelphia Phillies as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.5.
Prediction: Stick with the Phillies to make it two in-a-row tonight as Lee successfully avenges the earlier defeat with another strong outing.
