The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is over a third of the way complete and after the first 10 weeks of action some teams have made an early statement they hope to carry right through this summer while some others are already digging themselves an early hole they may not be able to climb out of.
All 16 National League teams still have the dream of making it all the way to this year’s World Series, but in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually have a chance. Here is a look at my top four teams in the NL after the first half of June and their current odds to win the Pennant and the World Series.
Atlanta Braves Odds to Win the NL Pennant 15-1 World Series 30-1
Since tearing things up in the second half of May, Atlanta has cooled off a bit going 5-5 in their last 10 games. With an overall record of 37-27 they still have a 1 ½ game lead over New York and a 3 ½ game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East. Their overall pitching and hitting has remained solid as they rank sixth in the NL with a team ERA of 3.73 and have a team batting average of .262, good for sixth as well. Their 312 runs scored are second only to Cincinnati in league.
San Diego Padres Odds to Win the NL Pennant 30-1 World Series 150-1
San Diego continues to holds the lead in the NL West by the slightest of margins. With a record of 37-26, they lead the Dodgers by a game and the Giants by 1 ½. The Padres have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games, but only San Francisco has been able to make up any ground in the division, going 7-3. Pitching has been the backbone of their success as they still lead the NL with a team ERA of just 2.97. Their hitting has been another story as they are currently ranked 14th in the NL with a team batting average of .246 and 260 runs scored.
Cincinnati Reds Odds to Win the NL Pennant 20-1 World Series 50-1
With the rest of their division going under .500 in their last 10 games, Cincinnati maintains a 1 ½ game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central with the next closest team being Chicago at 7 ½ games back. They are 36-28 overall and 5-5 in their last 10. While their overall pitching has been suspect at times with a team ERA of 4.52, ranking them 12th in the NL, their bats continue to light things up. They lead the National League with a team batting average of .279 and are second to only the Yankees in the Major Leagues. They lead the NL in runs scored as well with 327.
Los Angeles Dodgers Odds to Win the NL Pennant 10-1 World Series 20-1
Despite going 5-5 in their last 10 games, including dropping their last three, at 36-27 Los Angeles still has the best record of any non division leader in the NL. They trail the Padres by just a game and have the second best home record in the league at 23-13. Their team ERA is currently 4.08 ranking them 10th overall in the league. Their .265 team batting average is third best in the NL and they are sixth in runs scored with 292.
