The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is over a quarter of the way complete and after the first nine weeks of action some teams have made an early statement they hope to carry right through this summer while some others are already digging themselves an early hole they may not be able to climb out of.
All 16 National League teams still have the dream of making it all the way to this year’s World Series, but in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually have a chance. Here is a look at my top four teams in the NL after the first week in June and their current odds to win the Pennant and the World Series.
Atlanta Braves Odds to Win the NL Pennant 15-1 World Series 30-1
Atlanta’s nine game winning streak finally came to an end over the weekend in a 4-5 loss to the Dodgers, but with an overall record of 33-24 they still lead the Phillies in the NL East by two games. The Braves have gotten to this point with a solid combination of both pitching and hitting. They have a team ERA of 3.72 ranking them sixth in the NL. They are ranked 10th in the NL with a team batting average of .257, but they are tied for second with Milwaukee with 278 runs scored.
Cincinnati Reds Odds to Win the NL Pennant 20-1 World Series 50-1
Cincinnati continues to find ways to keep pace with the Cardinals in the NL Central. They are currently tied atop the division with St.Louis with both teams having an overall record of 33-24. After losing two out of three to the Cards last week they bounced back by taking two out of three from the Nationals over the weekend. The Reds lead the NL in batting with a team average of .277 and 290 runs scored. Their pitching has been much less impressive as they are ranked 12th in the NL with a team ERA of 4.46.
St. Louis Cardinals Odds to Win the NL Pennant 5-2 World Series 15-2
Despite winning seven of their last 10, St. Louis could not regain the outright lead in the division this week. They have played well at home, winning 19 of 29, but they are just 14-14 on the road. This week they have a six game West Coast road trip that will provide an opportunity in improve on their .500 record. The Cardinals pitching has remained the most solid part of their team as they lead the Major Leagues with a team ERA of just 2.98. Their .264 team batting average is third best in the NL and they are ranked eighth in runs scored with 261.
San Diego Padres Odds to Win the NL Pennant 30-1 World Series 150-1
San Diego continues to defy the odds by clinging to a ½ game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West. They are 33-23 overall and have gone 5-5 in their last 10. Their 15-11 record on the road is tops in the division and they have gone 18-12 at home. Pitching has been the Padres strength as well as their 3.05 team ERA is second to only St. Louis in the entire league. Much of their problem has been consistency at the plate. Their team batting average is .252, ranked 13th in the NL. They are ranked 12th in runs scored with 239.
