The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is a quarter of the way complete and after the first seven weeks of action some teams have made an early statement they hope to carry right through this Summer while some others are already digging themselves an early hole they may not be able to climb out of.
Every National League team has a dream of making it all the way to this year’s World Series, but in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually have a chance. Here is a look at my top four teams in the NL after week seven and their current odds to win the Pennant and the World Series.
Philadelphia Phillies Odds to Win the NL Pennant 9-4 World Series 9-2
After sweeping the Brewers three straight, the Phillies split two game series with both Pittsburgh and Chicago (Cubs) this past week before dropping the last two games of a three game interleague series with Boston over the weekend. They currently lead the East by 3 ½ games with an overall record of 26-17.Staff ace, Roy Halladay endured on his second straight defeat in Sunday’s 8-3 loss to the Red Sox. Lifetime he is now just 14-15 against that team. Overall the Phillies are ranked fourth in the NL in pitching with a team ERA of 3.69. They are ranked second in the NL in batting average (.269) and third in runs scored (227).
St. Louis Cardinals Odds to Win the NL Pennant 5-2 World Series 15-2
After going 5-2 in their last seven games, St. Louis is back on top in the Central division with an overall record of 26-19, ½ a game ahead of Cincinnati. They took two from Washington to start the week, split two with Florida, and then won two out of three from the Angels in an interleague weekend series. Overall pitching remains their strong suit as they are ranked second in the NL with a team ERA of 3.07. With a team batting average of just .256 and 196 runs scored, they rank 11th in the NL.
San Diego Padres Odds to Win the NL Pennant 30-1 World Series 150-1
San Diego is 4-6 in their last 10 games, but that has still been good enough to hold onto a slim one game lead in the West. They are 26-18 overall, including an impressive 14-9 record on the road. The Padres pitching staff leads the NL with a combined ERA of just 2.98 in their first 44 games. Offensively, they still leave a lot to be desired as their .245 team batting average has them ranked 14th and their 188 runs scored is ranked 13th among all National League teams.
Los Angeles Dodgers Odds to Win the NL Pennant 10-1 World Series 20-1
After a slow start, Los Angeles is starting to look like the team that most people picked to repeat as NL West champions. They have won eight out of their last 10 and are currently just one game out of first with an overall record of 25-19. While, at 10-11 they have a losing record on the road, they are 15-8 in the friendly confines of Dodger Stadium. LA’s pitching staff is getting better, but they are still ranked 14th in the NL with a 4.32 team ERA. Their bats have carried them so far as the lead the league with a .277 batting average and are fourth in runs scored with 224.
