MLB American Power Rankings – April 20, 2010

The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is underway and after two weeks of action some teams have already made a statement while some others are off to a much slower start than expected. All 14 American League teams have a dream of making it all the way to this year’s World Series, but in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually have a chance. Here is a look at my top four teams in the AL after week two and their currents odds to win the Pennant and the World Series.

New York Yankees Odds to win the AL Pennant 2-1 World Series 14-5

New York is off to a solid start this season as they are tied atop the East with Tampa at 9-3 and have won all four of the series they have played so far. They bounced back from an opening day loss to take two out of three from Boston. They followed that up by taking two out of three from the Rays and Angels. This past weekend they completed a three game sweep of the Rangers with a 5-2 win on Sunday. Yankee starters C.C. Sabathia, A.J Burnett, and Andy Pettitte are a combined 6-0 in nine starts. Pettitte leads the group with an ERA of 1.35. The bats of Jose Posada (.378 average) and Derek Jeter (.380 average) book end a very strong lineup.

Minnesota Twins Odds to win the AL Pennant 14-1 World Series 30-1

Against some of the better teams in the AL, Minnesota has jumped out to a 9-4 start and has a 1 ½ game lead in the Central. They opened the season by taking three out of four from the Angels. The won a three game series against division rival Chicago and took two out of three from Boston in their home opening series. They lost to Kansas City 10-5 on Sunday, keeping them from pulling off a three game sweep of the Royals. Joe Mauer is off to a great start with 17 hits and 10 RBI’s in just 45 at-bats. Their pitching has been less than spectacular, but effective none the less.

Oakland Athletics Odds to win the AL Pennant 60-1 World Series 125-1

Oakland continues to win in the West to maintain the top spot in the division with a record of 9-5. They are 6-4 against division opponents, winning four out of seven against the Mariners and two out of three against the Angels. In a four game series against Baltimore, they beat the Orioles the first three games but dropped an 8-3 decision on Sunday. Dallas Braden is off to a good start, giving up 12 hits and six earned runs in 20 innings of work. Ryan Sweeney has had the hot bat with 16 hits and nine RBI’s in his first 50 at-bats.

Tampa Bay Rays Odds to win the AL Pennant 11-2 World Series 11-1

After starting out by losing two out of three to New York in their second series of the season, Tampa Bay has beaten both the Orioles and the Red Sox three straight times to run their winning streak to six and their record to 9-3. Matt Garza has been lights out in his first three starts; winning all three while giving up just two earned runs. David Price has also won his first two starts and has an ERA of 2.45. The offensive production has come from Evan Longoria, who has knocked in 10 runs and Carlos Pena, who has knocked in 12.
