The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season gets underway this Sunday when the Yankees visit the Red Sox in the American League opener. All 14 teams in the AL have dreams of making it all the way to this year’s World Series; however in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually have a chance. At the very least, every team will be looking to win more games than they did last year as this is a good measure as to which direction a team is headed. Here is a look at the over/under win total for each team along with my prediction on how they will end up.
The Orioles have won less than 70 games the past two seasons, but with a good, young nucleus of talent are poised to climb out of the AL East basement this year-OVER.
Even though they have one of the deepest starting rotations in the league there are some question marks on the offensive side of this ball club making you wonder whether they are good enough to overtake New York-UNDER
The White Sox went out this offseason and brought in players like Jake Peavy, Mark Teahan and Omar Vizquel to get them back on top in their division. With one of the more solid starting rotations in the AL they could win over 85 games- OVER
The Indians have a better than average batting order, but their pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired. With the loss of Cliff Lee for the full season they will struggle to match last year’s win total of 65-UNDER
They do have a solid pair of young arms in Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello and added Johnny Damon to the lineup, but overall the Tigers are starting to show their age in too many other areas-UNDER
Despite a lack of true power in the batting lineup, Kansas City has a solid rotation led by Zack Grienke, Gil Meche, and Brian Bannister and a decent closer in Joakim Soria which should be good enough to win 75 games-OVER
This season will depend on how well they can make up for the loss of John Lackey and Vladimir Guerrero as they will be missed. They could struggle a bit in the suddenly competitive AL West-UNDER
While their pitching is still a bit suspect, with AL MVP Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Jason Kubel anchoring the offense they should still win enough games to win their division again this season-OVER
With pretty much the same cast of characters back to try and win back to back World Series Championships, it is hard to believe this team will take too much of step backwards in relation to last’s season’s 103 wins-OVER
The main thing that Oakland has going for them this season is a young, solid starting rotation led by Ben Sheets and Trevor Cahill. Hanging onto Jack Cust is also a plus for this team-OVER
Seattle won 24 more games in 2009 than they did the season before. With offseason additions like P Cliff Lee and 2B Chone Figgens they are poised to take an even bigger step this season by seriously competing for the division-OVER
Along with a solid starting rotation the Rays still have players like Carl Crawford, Ben Zobrist, and B.J. Upton who should help them remain competitive in the East deep into the summer-OVER
By adding P Rich Harden to go along with Scott Feldman in the starting rotation their pitching should be improved over last season. There are still some health concerns with Josh Hamilton and Michael Young which makes me a bit leery of this team-UNDER
The Blue Jays only won 75 games last season and that was with Roy Halladay still in the starting rotation. With Baltimore and Tampa Bay improving in the East, that leaves them headed in the wrong direction-UNDER
