New York improved its overall record to 11-14 after nearly sweeping the Washington Nationals in its last series, and enter this weekend’s match up having won six straight games, but were still  five games behind the Phillies in the National League East to open the series on Friday.

As a team, the Mets are batting .254, tied for 13th in the league, while knocking in 104 runs and 21 long balls.

David Wright, who leads the team in homers with five, tied the score at one in the fourth, and Ike Davis doubled in the final run of the game during the sixth. Jose Reyes who’s batting .321, also had a good outing in D.C., getting New York back to within one with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but the Mets would come up short against the Nats in the closing innings.

This will be the second of six series between the two clubs and the three-game set features a pair of rematches on the mound from the last time the Mets visited earlier this month, with four of the six listed starters having appeared in the previous series.

The New York bullpen has been struggling and has a combined ERA of 4.42. Jonathon Niese (1-3, 5.10) drew the short straw again and will face Roy Halladay (3-1, 2.41) for a second time this season in Game 2.

Niese actually pitched well against the Phillies in three 2010 starts, and was 1-0 in two starts at Citizens Bank Park  with a 1.28 ERA./ But the Phillies brought home six runners off Niese in four innings when the two clashed back on April 7, while Halladay cruised through seven scoreless frames in Philadelphia’s 11-0 thrashing. The win left Halladay 5-1 in six starts vs. the Mets since joining the Phillies, 3-0 when pitching at home.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are coming off winning just once at Arizona avoiding the series sweep by winning the final game of a three-game set 8-4 on Wednesday.

Despite a plethora of injuries including All-Star second baseman Chase Utley, and promising rookie Domonic Brown, the Phils’ line up lit up the Diamondbacks pitching staff  knocking in three runs in the first and one more in the second inning off  Shane Victorino’s home run to deep left center

Victorino and Jimmy Rollins both had productive outings with Rollins knocking one out of the park in the fifth. Philadelphia also scored on a Brian Schneider walk with the bases loaded in the seventh and a Ryan Howard solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Philadelphia won five of the nine meetings at home against the Mets last season and took two of three earlier this month.

The odds makers have the Philadelphia Phillies as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.5.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Philadelphia– I think the experience of Halladay will stymie the New York lineup, as the Phillies light it up against Niese, in what is likely to be a short night for the lefty.
