Angels: Jered Weaver

The Mariners are struggling worse than expected thise season and Snell has done little to help. No one was expecting CY Young numbers but he has yet to win a game even though he has pitched better in his last three outings. The real story for the M’s has been a pitiful offence – ranked 27th in the league in runs per game at just over 3.5. Outside of Mike Sweeney, who seems to be rekindling his best years as a Royal no one, not even the mighty Ichiro is performing as projected. The lack of run support is making it very hard for this team to compete, even though they have the sixth best ERA in the majors. Chone Figgins has been an absolute disaster to this point, perhaps a return to LA for the weekend will spur him on a little bit as this team is desperate for a spark.

For this Saturday afternoon national broadcast the M’s have the luck of facing Angels ace Jered Weaver. Weaver got out to a very hot starts but has cooled of late. Either way he has really picked up his game this season striking out batters at a rate better than his caeer average. Weaver was brilliant against Seattle only three weeks ago holding the lineup to only two hits in over 7 innings. He is 9-3 against the M’s in his career. The Angels have been swinging the lumber better lately scoring 5 or more runs in 6 of their last seven heading into this series, roughing up a Jays staff that has surprised this year in the process.

The Play: Both these teams need this series to start bridging the gap in the AL West. Seattle’s poor offense combined with Weaver on the hill is not a good combination. However the series goes this game should go to the Angels. LAA 5 – SEA 1.
