Pitching Probables: Carlos Carrasco vs A.J. Burnett

The best story of the first two months – Cleveland – is in a serious funk right now and in danger of seeing it all slip away.  They have lost nine of their last ten games and are now tied at the top of the AL Central with Detroit.  They are looking to salvage something from their weekend set against the Yankees tonight after  having lost all three games in the Bronx but it won’t be easy.  Their single ray of hope is that the last time they won a game Carlos Carrasco was masterful against Minnesota, shutting out the Twins while giving up just three hits.  He has never faced New York before which may provide some advantage; although I am not one who generally thinks that way.  If you have good stuff and can pitch than that is what matter’s most, especially against a lineup as experienced as the Yankees.

It feels like every time I write about the New York Yankees A.J. Burnett is on the hill.  As a result I am forced to write about how inconsistent he is.  7 ER one start and 2 ER the one before that – seriously I am not making this up folks.  The same holds true for the Yanks in general this season I think. This is a good but not great team that is aging and not gracefully.  Against pretenders like the Indians they look very impressive but they have been embarrassed when playing top teams like the Boston Red Sox.  Still, if the season ended today they would be in the playoffs and who knows what would happen then.  Back to tonight, Burnett’s last 4 starts against Cleveland have all been quality efforts.  That and the Indians nosedive makes him and the Yankees a reasonable side to back this evening.

The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.5.

Prediction: Yanks will close out their exposition of the Indians with another win.  Burnett keeps em in it but is definitely not dominant.
