The White Sox opened the series with a 8-1 win on Thursday as they narrowed the deficit to 8 1/2 games of idle Detroit with 20 games remaining. Paul Konerko hit his 10th career grand slam, tying Robin Ventura’s club record
Meanwhile, the Tribe which was 10 games back heading into the series, is dangerously hovering around the .500 mark, a place they have not been since opening the season 0-2 against Chicago, a team that has given them fits, losing nearly 10 games to the White Sox this year while being foiled by their pitching staff.
A situation that is likely to get worse as Philip Humber takes the mound for Chicago on Saturday.
The righty (9-8, 3.45) set the tone in Monday’s matinee by pitching seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over the Twins, before sharing duties in Thursday’s doubleheader against Cleveland were he gave up 3 hits in 1.1 inning on the mound.
The White Sox, though, will be without the all-around player, Brent Lillibridge, after he suffered a broken hand when hit by a pitch on Thursday. Lillibridge, who has six hits including a double, home run and four RBIs against Cleveland, will be out for the remainder of the season.
A huge blow to a lineup that is hitting just .254. However, former White Sox star Jim Thome is hitting .214 with a homer and 16 strikeouts in 12 games since being acquired from Minnesota on Aug. 25.
Meanwhile, Fausto Carmona (6-14, 5.18) will toe the rubber for the Indians. The hard throwing right hander will be trying to bounce back after he was shelled during Tuesday’s 10-1 loss to Detroit, yielding seven runs and eight hits in just 1 1-3 innings. It was his shortest start since he pitched two-thirds of an inning vs. Texas in a start on Sept. 9, 2009. He hasn’t won a game at home since April 28.
The odds makers have the Chicago White Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Chicago White Sox - After sweeping the Tigers in a three game set last weekend in Detroit, the White Sox suffered an embarrassing 18-2 defeat the following night. However, they bounced back by winning three straight over the Minnesota Twins and followed Wednesday’s loss by winning Thursday. Meanwhile, it hasn’t been a good month for the Cleveland bullpen. With a better line up and a solid pitching staff, look for the Sox to take this one.
