Pitching Probables: Madison Bumgarner vs. Derek Lowe

Yesterday’s win means the Giants now have a couple of games to play with to advance to the the NLCS. As a result they can afford to start rookie Madison Bumgarner today with the hope that they can save ace Tim Lincecum for the opener in the next round. Bumgarner has all the talent in the world but still less than a full season in the majors. He has never faced Atlanta before but was amazing after his call up – only twice in 18 starts has he given up more than three runs. The Braves were dominated by lefty Jonathan Sanchez yesterday so I am sure the last thing they want to see is another lefty, although anything would inspire more confidence than having to face Lincecum again. The Giants offense is still showing no signs of breaking out so they will need another fine pitching performance to close out the series.

Atlanta will turn to its most experienced starter to extend the season and Bobby Cox’s career to another game. Derek Lowe pitched fairly well in the series opener and is being brought back on short rest as Atlanta’s best chance to keep it going. I expect another solid performance as he has been significantly better at home than on the road this year. This might apply to the whole team but Atlanta is 11-6 when Lowe starts at home compared to 7-10 on the road. The Braves are the favourite in this one and they are 15-9 when Lowe starts in that situation which is another reason to have confidence. On short rest this is gut check time for Lowe. He needs to keep them in the game and hope the Braves lineup can wake up.

Prediction: Before the series started I thought the Braves would take the series in 5 but the way it has played out makes me doubt that prediction. Bumgarner will start building his reputation with a stellar outing today in the victory
