The Cincinnati Reds (29-28, 17-12 at home) go into this game with one of the hottest hitters in the league. Jay Bruce is tops in the National League with 17 home runs (16 against the NL), and 46 RBI. Bruce is also batting .320 on his home field so far this season, compared to his overall .292 average.
The Reds hitting is some of the best in the league. They are third in runs and eighth in batting average so far this season, with Bruce leading the way.
The 24-year-old right fielder and the rest of his team will have a tough matchup though, going against Dodgers’ starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw (6-3). Kershaw, 23, has become everything that LA thought he could be, and his last start he performed great with a complete game only allowing two hits, one walk, and 10 strikeouts in the Dodgers’ 8-0 win over the Florida Marlins.
The Reds will also have an ace, albeit a surprising one, on the mound.
Right-hander Johnny Cueto (2-2) will start for Cincinnati for the sixth time of the year. Throughout the year, Cueto has been on the cusp of dominance, but hasn’t had that one great performance that stands out to you. He is averaging more than six innings played per game with an ERA 2.20. In Cueto’s last start, the 25-year-old went eight innings allowing two runs on five hits.
The Dodgers’ (26-31, 11-15 away) bats have been the biggest reason for LA’s demise this season (that and the whole divorce thing), but do have hitters that can light up any pitcher on any-given night.
Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier have led the team in every aspect of hitting this season, dominating every category so far. Ethier is currently day-to-day, but count on him playing. His first game back after missing three straight games he went 2-3 from the plate while adding his sixth home run of the year.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Los Angeles – Expect this game to be pitcher-dominated. Kershaw will dominate once again for LA, slowing the heavy hitters of Cincinnati, most likely holding them to less than two runs, and if he does that there’s no doubt Ethier and Kemp can pull out a couple of runs to lift the Dodgers to a victory.
The odds makers have the Cincinnati Reds as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.5.
