Pitching Probables: Chad Billingsley vs. Corey Luebke
The Dodgers travelled south and immediately put an end to the Padres dramatic losing streak. With the Dodgers losing the first two games of the series they have evened the season series at 7 a piece and tonight’s game is still very critical to the Padres playoff chances. Runs have been at a premium in the series and tonight the Dodgers have the advantage on the mound behind Chad Billingsley. He is 1-1 against SD this year including a shutout in July at Petco Park. Billingley is finishing the season very strong, he hasn’t given up more that three runs in a start since July 17, a span of 9 in a row. As it has been all season the offense will be the determining factor. The Dodgers should be able to put some runs on the board facing rookie Corey Luebke who was unimpressive in his lone start this season against Colorado
The Padres may be off the ledge but they are by no means comfortable at this point. If they can’t hold on to the division they may not make the playoffs at all which would be a shame after leading for much of the season. Even during the losing streak they were still getting pretty good pitching but are being forced to rely on some arms without great track records down the stretch. Case in point, tonight’s starter Corey Luebke. His numbers in the minors definitely warranted the callup but he is not that highly touted. I am sure SD would rather have someone else on the hill but they don’t have any other great options and are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle as the Dodgers will be unfamiliar with his stuff. It won’t make a difference how he fares if the Padres don’t hit. The additions of Miguel Tejada and Ryan Ludwick haven’t done much to improve the offense around Adrian Gonzalez.
Prediction: Billingley should be able to keep the Padres bats in check while the Dodgers hitters get to the rookie Luebke. With the total so low that might be the play also.
San Diego is -102 and the O/U is 6.5.
