Pitching Probables: Chad Billingsley vs. Barry Zito
Chad Billingsley hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts but will be pitching today on short rest. He has done so twice in his career and the results were not great but he will be facing a Giants lineup that he shutout for 9 innings a little more than a week ago. The Dodgers have been taking care of business within their own division and swept the Giants in Frisco in June. This is a very big series and both teams need some wins to stay close to San Diego. Los Angeles really needs a hitter to step up. Despite better than average talent they are getting mediocre production throughout the lineup. Andre Ethier is really struggling and his average is now below .300. No one has really stepped up in Manny Ramirez’s absence and he wasn’t exactly killing it for them. LA needs to scrap to score and will need to do so again today to gain ground on San Francisco.
San Francisco has been very good after the All-Star break building a little cushion between them and the Dodgers. If they can sweep this series it could be a knockout blow to LA, one they would love to deliver. Barry Zito is having a very nice season slotted behind Lincecum and Cain. Looking deeper you can see that he is much better at home than away. He has been only average against the Dodgers in his career but was sharp against them on the road last week. Althought their overall production are not that different San Fran is getting better than expected production from Aubrey Huff and Andres Torres while rookie Buster Posey has been fantastic. They are making up for a subpar season from Kung Fu Panda Pablo Sandoval.
Prediction: Despite the short rest I like Billingsley to be sharp and LA to win a low scoring affair over Zito and the Giants.
