Things seem to be going from bad to worse for the Chicago Cubs. They have lost the first two games of their weekend set to St. Louis and are currently on a 5 game losing streak. If they hadn’t swept the lowly Astros prior to that it likely would be a lot longer. They have given up 22 runs in 2 games against the Cardinals so they definitely need a strong pitching performance if they want to experience winning again. Ryan Dempster has talent but like the rest of the team he has been inconsistent most the season. In his last start against St. Louis he gave up 6 runs earning the loss in a 6-1 decision. The Cubbies are getting hammered lately and they need him to stop the bleeding. Chicago has won only 1 of his last seven starts against their rival.

The St. Louis Cardinals have won 7 of 10 and are currently in second place in the very crowded National League Central. Having been to the playoffs before, and recently picked up some reinforcements (Edwin Jackson) they are hoping to outlast their division rivals. Continuing to beat up on the Cubs will help and they have won 8 of 9 against their oldest rivals this season. Truth be told I don’t think much of starter Jake Westbrook but he has a 9-4 record and the team is 12-9 when he starts. I think he is being held together bu duct tape but in this situation, against a reeling Chicago team, I am willing to overlook this fact. A sweep seems imminent.
The odds makers have the St. Louis Cardinals as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.5.
Prediction: Dempster will make the Cardinals earn it but he won’t get enough support for the Cubs to stop their losing ways.
