The Chicago Cubs (23-31) will try to take a win from the first-place St. Louis Cardinals (33-25) at Busch Stadium on Saturday night. The Cardinals are 15-12 at home this season, and they will have a big home-field advantage tonight, not because of a rockin’ house, but because of the scorching heat.
Chicago is having a rough season so far on both sides of the game, coming in at 17th in runs and 29th in ERA. They are going up against one of the biggest hitting teams in the league, and don’t seem to have an answer on the mound.
Chicago will start pitcher Randy Wells (1-1), who is coming of a tough start against Pittsburgh when he went four innings with an ERA of 11.25 in the 10-0 loss. Pittsburgh is ranked 23rd in runs and 26th in batting average.
Alfonso Soriano will be on his third day on the 15-day disabled list during this game, so the Cubs will be without their best hitter once again. Soriano has 12 home runs and 29 RBIs on the season.
The Cardinals will again be at the front of their rotation this series, and will start ace Kyle Lohse (7-1). Lohse, 32, is looking in his prime so far this year allowing two or less runs in his last ten games. Having Chitown’s best hitter out of the lineup only bolsters his chances for a strong outing.
The batting in the Gateway to the West is some of the best in the entire league, and the Cardinals are ranked first overall in runs, batting average, and on-base percentage, showing how dominant they can be when they are clicking on all cylinders.
St. Louis has heavy hitters up and down their lineup, as it seems they do every year. Left-fielder Matt Holliday is batting .342 for the Cardinals this season, and is averaging .304 against Chicago over the span of his career. In the last week though, Holliday has been a bit of a cold streak with just one hit in nine games.
Switch-hitter Lance Berkman is looking to continue his dominance this season, a season in which he is batting .329 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs.
Albert Pujols is having a bit of a cold year in 2011, batting .265 with just nine home runs, but the first baseman will look to start the turnaround tonight against Chicago.
Each St. Louis hitter is looking to have a big night against Wells, and it will be hard for Chicago to contain them during any point of this series, let alone on an off night in pitching.
The odds makers have the St. Louis Cardinals as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.5.

Matt’s Free Prediction: ST. Louis – This is a no-brainer. Chicago has no answers against St. Louis’ lineup, and their starting pitcher will get knocked around from the get-go. With Chicago’s best hitter on the DL, and St. Louis’ best pitcher on the mound, this is a nightmare matchup for the Cubs.
