Pitching Probables: Chris Narveson vs. Adam Ottavino

2010 just isn’t really going the way the Brewers hoped. They just can’t seem to get any consistency from the team despite good numbers from several regulars. The key has been pitching or lack thereof. After Yovani Gallardo no other starter has an ERA under 4.46 and we all know about the struggles of closer Trevor Hoffman. As a result the Brew Crew look to out slug the competition. They have the bats to do it but they can’t get them cooking all at once. For example Corey Hart has been red hot with 6 homers in his last 10 games. Meanwhile the combo of Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder have just 3 homersbetween them in that stretch and Casey McGhee seems to be fading fast after a hot start. This team definitely has talent but it seems they are unlikely to put it together which make them hard to back when Gallardo is not on the Hill.

St. Louis on the other hand is one of the most consistent teams in the game. Can anybody remember the last time Albert Pujols had a slump? It seems like no matter who they plug in the lineup they always get a quality performance, although starter Ottavino’s stats are nothing to get excited about even though they are in limited action. The Cards won two of three earlier in the season but for the most part these teams have played each other pretty even in recent history. If either Adam Wainwright or Chris Carpenter was starting this one it would be a no brainer to back the Cards but with this pitching matchup anything could happen.

Prediction: When I saw the pitching matchup my initial thought was who? Digging deeper I can see that Narveson is 4-1 on the road and strikes out batters at a pretty good clip. Also surprising is that he has a .385 batting average. Now I would never use a pitchers BA as a reason to back that team but since I am going to back MIL anyway I figured why not throw that in. This is Milwaukee’s best chance to grab a game this weekend with STL tossing Wainright on Friday and Garcia on Sunday.
