The Braves may have not been held hitless like the Reds but they didn’t fare much better in their opener against Tim Lincecum and the Giants. In game 2 tonight they need a dominant performance from Tommy Hanson, who has the best stuff on the team, or else it will be arrivaderci Bravos in a hurry. Please note that Hanson had a freak batting practice injury yesterday resulting in a bruised eye but it still expected to pitch tonight. In Hanson’s lone start against the Giants this season he was very sharp (7 innings, 1 run) but it won’t matter if the lineup doesn’t back him up. Its too bad Chipper Jones isn’t healthy, he is the Brave who has had the most career success against Matt Cain (.417). Longing for Chipper is a lost cause as his career might be over so let’s hope Derek Lee steps up in his absence.
Tim Lincecum is a tough act to follow but Matt Cain should be used to it by now. While Lincecum was being questioned throughout the summer Cain was quietly enjoying his second best season to date, one in which he demonstrated some real growth by walking fewer batters while increasing his innings pitched. He can strike guys out too but is probably the Giants best pitch to contact guy. Cain should keep the Giants in the game but the Giants could also use more production from the batting order. It would be great if Pablo Sandoval could break out because he is supposed to be their best hitter, but it probably won’t happen against Hanson – he has never got a hit off him (0 for 7). The Giants will score a single run again but this time it won’t be enough.
Prediction: Atlanta bounces back behind a strong performance by Hanson. Not quite Lincecum but pretty close.
San Francisco is -142 and the O/U is 6.5
Score Prediction:
Atlanta Braves – 3
San Franscisco Giants – 1
