The Boston Red Sox took the opener of this series last night when the pitching matchup was definitely in their favour with ace lefty Jon Lester on the mound. Tonight they look to continue their winning ways behind knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who has had a mediocre season to date. Wakefield hasn’t had much success against the bashing Yankees in the past. Going back to 2006, the Sox have won only 3 of his 10 starts and only once has he given up less than three runs. The Red Sox have one of the best offenses in the league (#1 in OPS) and will look to pile on the runs while hoping that Wakefield can deliver the game to a bullpen which may or may not have the recently suspended Jonathan Papelbon. (I think he will likely appeal and miss a series against say, the Royals later on)
It is surprising that the won-loss records of these two teams are so close given that the Yankees have been absolutely dominated by the Red Sox this year – losing 6 of 7 including last night. In a scheduling quirk none of the previous games were started by tonight’s Yanks starter – the enigmatic A.J. Burnett. That is probably a good thing as Burnett has been hammered by Boston in the past. He has only 1 quality start against Boston since coming to the Bronx, but with Wakefield’s numbers similarly troubling maybe something has to give in this one…although it is quite possible both starter’s get shelled. The Yankees may be in the hunt right now but in my opinion this is an overrated team that isn’t showing much to indicate it can continue its record long term. (How much can you really expect from Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia?)
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 10.

Prediction: Picking a side for this one is tough with the starters. Probably the best play is the over as I see at least a dozen runners crossing the plate in this one.
