Boston won last night in dramatic fashion, taking yet another series from the New York Yankees this season. Are they due for a letdown tonight as they hit the road against a Minnesota squad whose season is very close to officially over? Tim Wakefield takes the mound and even though I think he is a risky pitcher to back the Sox have won two thirds of his starts this season. The best part is that he is getting a whopping 6.1 runs of support on the season (with that offense anyone could win really). Boston is 3-1 against the Twins this season and the one loss was a game Wakefield started back in May. Wakefield hasn’t been money against the Twins with Boston losing 3 of his last 4 decisions against the usually scrappy and contending squad.
It is definitely odd to see the Minnesota Twins so far down in the standings at this time of year. Locals can say what they want but the Twinkies are done which might make it difficult for this team to compete hard the rest of the season. Its not that they don’t have talent but other than Jim Thome’s pursuit of 600 homers what else is there to get excited for when you have a team that is pretty set at most positions and is just experiencing a brutal year of injuries and underperformance. One of the few players who has exceeded expectations this season is starter Scott Baker. Baker has always been pretty steady but this year he is on track for a career best 3.01 ERA . Included among his 2011 success is a victory over Boston in which he was very sharp with 8 strikeouts over 8 innings. They will need that kind of pitching tonight.
The odds makers have the Boston Red Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
Prediction: Take the Twins who get the Red Sox in a bit of a letdown situation (post Yankees) with their best starter on the hill. Good value too with them being slight underdogs.
Score Prediction: Minnesota Twins – 6, Boston Red Sox – 5
