Don’t look now, but despite being silent at the trading deadline the Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim?) are right in the thick of it in the American League West. LA scored two runs off of “the legendary” Mariano Rivera last night to take the opener of a series against the New York Yankees, the team they will have to catch if they can’t surpass Texas to win their division. It is a good thing they took the opener because their chances tonight are not nearly as good with rookie Garrett Richards taking the hill – his first ever major league appearance. He has amassed a 12-2 record in the minors this season but is making a huge leap from the Texas League to Yankee stadium. Considered more crafty than powerful it will be interesting to see how he performs. There is definitely value on the Angels today with tremendous risk as well of course.
The New York Yankees will be countering with the slightly more experienced Ivan Nova – who has to be wondering what he did wrong to get sent down last month. If you have been tracking Nova closely you will see a pretty 10-4 record and the fact that the Yankees have won his last 7 starts. Nova certainly has benefited from the Yankees powerful lineup (he gets 6.4 runs of support on average) and will need to watch his walks against an Angles team that is more scrappy than good with the bat, scoring just enough to win, barely. As long as he can keep his team in the game you have to think that the Yankees bats will eventually win the day given the experience of his opposing pitcher and the fact that the Angles bullpen has been used extensively of late.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.
Prediction: It is hard to like a rookie hitting the Bronx for his very first start (especially one I don’t know much about). Nova may not be Sabathia but unlike A.J. Burnett he is a winner.
