The AL West has become a total dogfight, with the top three teams separated by just three games. The Angels are third in that race and they will need to heat up if they have a chance to take the pennant.
On the other side of town, it’s a whole different objective for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they are just trying to keep their pride and confidence and win any game they can in an effort to shift fan’s attention off the front office and onto the field.
Both teams are a bit on the boring side, with both being near the bottom in nearly every batting category with the exception of batting average.
But if pitching is your favored aspect of the game, then this entire series should thrill you.
In Game 2, the starting pitcher for the Angels will be right-hander Tyler Chatwood (4-4).
Chatwood’s last game was a 7-3 win over the New York Mets on June 19. The win came after the rookie had two straight games in which he gave up five runs, with the most recent being one of his worst performances of his short three-month-long Majors career, when he only played 3.2 innings for an ERA of 4.20.
The 21-year-old Chatwood is having a respectable inaugural season, with a 3.84 ERA overall with 43 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers will put Hiroki Kuroda (5-8) on the mound for Saturday afternoon’s game. The 36-year-old veteran is having one of his worst years of his career, but is still holding on to a respectable 3.07 ERA. Kuroda also has 75 strikeouts on the season, so he still has the ability to retire batters at will.
In Kuroda’s last game, a 1-0 win over the Houston Astros on June 19, he went seven innings only allowing three hits.
The boys in blue are trying to make this season as respectable as possible on the field, but there doesn’t seem to be many players willing to step up to the challenge. Center fielder Matt Kemp leads the Dodgers in nearly every batting statistic for the year, while in the pitching department Clayton Kershaw is the only reliable pitcher on the Dodgers’ pitching staff.
The Halo’s roster is a strong contrast to the Dodgers’, with contributions coming from up and down the lineup in terms of batting.
Second baseman Howard Kendrick leads in batting average with .305, Right fielder Torii Hunter leaders in RBIs with 39, and designated hitter Bobby Abreu is tops in on-base percentage and hits with .402 and 77 respectively.
The odds makers have the Los Angeles Dodgers as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.5.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Angels – The Dodgers are in so much disarray that they don’t seem to have a chance against most teams these days, let alone the Angels who’ve pounded them at home repeatedly throughout the last decade.
