2010-2011 Penn State Season Preview

Following Penn State’s NIT championship in 2009, the Nittany Lions couldn’t come up with an encore and flopped, losing 20 games last season. Yet they could have enjoyed a respectable campaign had they not lost 11 contests by fewer than seven points, including eight against Big Ten opponents. Only Illinois played in more close Big Ten games. The Nittany Lions were 3-3 in their final six games of the 2009-10 season with a two-point loss to No. 11 Michigan State and a four-point setback to No.6 Purdue among them. An ambitious nonconference schedule that includes five teams with at least 20 victories last season awaits Penn State, including trips to Mississippi and Virginia Tech (for the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge) and a home date with coACC regular-season champion Maryland. Four starters return, led by all-league guard Talor Battle, the Big Ten’s second-leading scorer at 18.5 points per game. The 6-0 senior needs just 25 rebounds to become the first Penn State player to get 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists for a career.

Penn State Backcourt

Battle is the centerpiece and could be joined by half-brother Taran Buie, one of three incoming players. Buie chose to attend Penn State over offers from several ACC schools. Another intriguing incoming freshman is 6-4 Tre Bowman, who led York (Pa.) Thomas More School to the National Prep School championship semifinals last season. Redshirt freshman Jermaine Marshall averaged 19.1 points per game two years ago at Red Land (Pa.), where he is the school’s all-time leading scorer and, like Buie last season at State College (Pa.), was a second-team all-state selection. Meanwhile, sophomore Tim Frazier started 10 games as a Penn State freshman last season, contributing five points and 2.3 assists per game. Junior Cammeron Woodyard also could get significant minutes.

Penn State Frontcourt

Seniors David Jackson, who averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game; Jeff Brooks, 7,4 points and 4.2 rebounds and 6-10 Andrew Jones, 6.0 points and 5.1 rebounds, represent a cast of experienced players in the frontcourt and could help take the pressure off Battle in the leadership department. Jackson and Brooks are coming off by far the best year of their careers. Jackson raised his scoring average by five points and Brooks by 4,1 points per game. Brooks averaged 10.8 points and 5.2 rebounds during Penn State’s final six games. Another incoming freshman who might give Penn State a lift is 6-8 Jonathan Graham, who averaged a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds per game and added an average of 3,4 blocks last season at Baltimore Calvert Hall. Sophomore Sasa Borovnjak and redshirt freshman Billy Oliver add depth to Penn State’s frontcourt. Both are expected to see more action after combining for just 23 appearances last year.

2010-2011 Penn State Predictions

Battle has established himself as one of the top players in the Big Ten and will be an All-America candidate to start this season. He is the leading returning scorer and secondleading returner in assists in the conference. With a leader such as Battle, it’s important for Penn State’s other regulars to follow suit, and the Nittany Lions appear to have some important pieces to supplement Battle’s star power. Penn State returns 75 percent of its scoring and 67 percent of its rebounding, giving coach Ed DeChellis some reason for optimism. Penn State Finish in the Big Ten: 8th
