2010-2011 Purdue Season Preview
There are no mixed messages or ambiguous goals in West Lafayette this winter. With two terrific seniors leading the way toward the top of the preseason polls, the Boilermakers are gunning for an NCAA championship. Purdue’s past two seasons ended in the Sweet 16 due, in no small part, to senior forward Robbie Hummel’s bad breaks with injuries. The two-time first-team All-Big Ten pick endured yet another ACL injury the first week of this season, which will hurt their chances once again. Senior center JaJuan Johnson and senior guard E’Twaun Moore tested the NBA Draft process before opting to return for one more try at Purdue’s first Final Four appearance in 31 years. It’s Painter’s job to fit the Boilers’ two juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen into the right parts of the puzzle.

Purdue Backcourt
Moore, a first-team All-Big Ten pick last season, is on pace to become the fifth 2,000 point scorer in Purdue history. He’s one of those rare characters who boasts a midrange game as good or better than his 3-point touch. At the same time, Painter has asked Moore to inherit Chris Kramer’s role as defensive stopper. Painter likes to play three guards, and there are a ton of candidates to join Moore on the floor. Junior Lewis Jackson – whose matchless quickness was limited last season after he broke his foot – will share the point with explosive sophomore Kelsey Barlow. Freshman Terone Johnson, a combo guard who finished second in Indiana’s Mr. Basketball voting, could see time at the point, too. Junior Ryne Smith, sophomore John Hart and lean freshman Anthony Johnson all have the 3-point prowess the Boilers need to keep defenses honest. Purdue can’t afford to shoot 32 percent from the arc again.
Purdue Frontcourt
JaJuan Johnson is the nation’s most skilled center offensively, but he also keeps opposing teams out of the paint with his massive wingspan and shot-blocking sensibilities. He will play most of the minutes at power forward and center, but the Boilers need at least two underclassmen to play big roles off the bench. Improvements by sophomore Patrick Bade and redshirt freshman Sandi Marcius could allow Johnson to shift to power forward occasionally. Sophomore D.J. Byrd and freshman Travis Carroll can help at power forward.
2010-2011 Purdue Predictions
The Boilers didn’t get to play in last season’s Final Four at Indianapolis, but nobody will have a problem if they make amends for that with a trip to Houston in April.
