2010-2011 Clemson Season Preview
With Trevor Booker gone to the NBA Clemson no longer has a big-time player – but it does have a big-time coach. A bigger-time coach than Oliver Purnell gone to DePaul? Absolutely. Not that Oliver Purnell was bad, because he was not. But Brad Brownell is that good. Everywhere Brownell goes, teams win more than they ever have, and that is not hyperbole. The UNC Wilmington record for wins in a season is 25 in 2006; Brownell was the coach. The Wright State record for wins in a season is 23 in 2007; Brownell was the coach. The Clemson record for wins in a season is 25. Just saying.

Clemson Backcourt
Everyone’s back from the backcourt that helped Clemson to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, starting with point guard Demontez Stitt, a mediocre 3-point marksman for two seasons (27.4 percent) who became a 39.4-percent sharpshooter last season. Versatile wing Tanner Smith returns after being one of the ACC’s most improved players last season, as does two-way sparkplug Andre Young off the bench. To that trio, Brownell adds his first recruit at Clemson – Cory Stanton of Springfield, Tenn., who signed with Brownell at Wright State and was allowed to follow him South.
Clemson Frontcourt
Booker is gone, but Booker is back. It’s not a fair trade, but it could work out well for Clemson anyway. Trevor Booker’s younger brother, Devin, was nearly as productive as big bro on a per-minute basis. He averaged just 11 minutes, but Devin Booker shot 56.1 percent from the floor, better than Trevor (52.1 percent). And Devin Booker didn’t even lead the team in shooting. Jerai Grant shot 63.2 percent from the field, and also led the team with 1.7 blocked shots per game. Like Devin Booker, his playing time (from 20.3 minutes per) will go up. Grant and Booker give Clemson a nice start up front, and Milton Jennings is an intriguing third option. Jennings was the only McDonald’s All-American signed by Purnell in his seven seasons at Clemson. He never got his shooting legs underneath him (6-for-35 on 3s), but Jennings came to Clemson with impressive perimeter credentials for such a big player. We’ll see what Brownell can do with him.
2010-2011 Clemson Predictions
Brownell can’t wait to see what he can do with this roster. He likes it. He studied it before he decided he wanted the job. Now Clemson will see how long it takes Brownell to win an NCAA Tournament game. Purnell never did, watching Clemson lose in the first round in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Athletic enough to defend the basket, the Tigers will have to lean on their defense early on as the newcomers find their way. Clemson Finish in the ACC: 7th
