Pac 10 Football Week 6 Preview, Predictions, Odds & Picks – Saturday October 9, 2010

OK, before we bust right into this week’s match ups, let’s look at some of the more interesting stats in the PAC-10 as we head into Week 6.
There were four games in the PAC-10 last weekend that teams averaged nearly 500 yards and put up 34.4 points. That’s a lot of yardage, mainly coming from some very potent rushing attacks.
There are four Pac-10 teams rank among the nation’s top-25 in rushing. They are No. 2 Oregon, No. 10 UCLA, No. 15 USC, and No. 24 Stanford. Three conference running backs rushed for more than 200 yards in Week 5. Oregon’s LaMichael James (257 yards vs. Stanford), USC’s Allen Bradford (223 vs. Washington), and UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin (216 yards vs. Washington State).
So what about the PAC-10 passing and QB’s?
Well, only two are among the top-25 in passing– No. 9 Arizona State and No. 11 Arizona. However, USC QB Matt Barkley is No. 1 in the Pac-10 and 14th in the nation in passing efficiency.
And the teams are stacking up defensively with some of the best in the Nation as well, as the Arizona Wildcats are No. 2 in the nation in total defense (230.75 yards per game), and haven’t allowed a single rushing TD while not allowing a TD in three of four games. That’s some serious defense.
Finally, there are also four Pac-10 teams rank among the top-15 in the nation in turnover margin, including the Oregon State Beavers who are the only team in the country that hasn’t turned the ball over one time.
My pick for PAC-10 game of the week has to be USC at Stanford on ABC. There is some bad blood between these two schools after the Cardinals two-point controversy during last year’s meeting at the Coliseum. It could get ugly, as the Trojans are not soon to forget.

UCLA (3-2, 1-1) at California (2-2, 0-1), FSN, 3:30 p.m ET
The looming question here is wondering which Bruins team will show up. The one that rolled to a 31-13 win over then-No. 23 Houston and triumphed in a 34-12 upset at then-No.7 Texas, or the one that was shut out by Stanford and nearly crashed but rallied to beat an awful Washington State last weekend.
Meanwhile, the G-Bears have succumbed to similar lapses as they began their 2010 campaign outscoring its opponents 104-7, but were creamed by Nevada a week later and fell to No.14 Arizona last Saturday.
Cal and UCLA have clashed 80 times with the Bruins leading the series 49-30-1. However, the G-Bears has won the last two meetings, 45-26 last season and 41-20 in 2008.
The Bruins will get to test its new pistol offense against a very good Cal defense that is allowing just 18 points and 282.5 yards per game. UCLA is scoring an average of 25.8 points per game–35.7 points over its past three games—and are averaging 262.4 yards per game on the ground. If Bears can’t slow UCLA’s rushing attack, it will be another loss like the one they suffered in Nevada, as they were scorched by 316 yards on the ground..

No. 3 Oregon (5-0, 2-0) at Washington State (1-4, 0-2), 5 p.m ET
Ducks outgained the Cougars 514-158 en route to a 52-6 win.
While this would appear to be an easy win for the No. 5 Oregon Ducks, stranger things happen in college football.
The inept Cougars nearly beat a lackadaisical Bruins team last week before losing 42-28, to maintain its PAC-10 worst record of 9 wins and 37 losses since the 2005 season. So how does a team get this bad?
The defense is giving up an average of 42.8 points per game while the offense over the past two seasons has ranked 119th in total yards and have had more punting yards than total offensive yards in the same span.
I think the bigger question may be how long will Chip Kelly keep his starters in the game? My guess is until halftime.
The Ducks lead the FBS with 569.2 yards, and have outscored its opponents 141-68 in the first half this season.
Oregon seems to be scoring at will, putting up 56.6 points per game, and is coming off one of the most impressive wins in all of college football this season, as the Ducks came from behind to beat the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal 52-31 last Saturday.
Wazzou has been outscored by the Ducks 168-27 and has lost the last three meetings, including a 63-14 defeat in Pullman in 2008.

Oregon State (2-2, 1-0) at No. 9 Arizona (4-0, 1-0), Versus, 7 p.m ET
The Wildcats began its 2010 campaign with a couple of cupcake wins over and the Citadel and then made their mark with a remarkable win over then-No. 9 Iowa.
However, a 10-9 victory over Cal in the final minute will not be a confidence booster as the ‘Cats prepare for its bout with the Oregon State Beavers.
The Beavs trial the series with their neighbors from the south, 21-11-1, since 1966. However, Oregon State has won nine of the last 11 meetings and four straight in Tucson a place where the Wildcats have won 15 of their last 18.
OSU appears to have finally awakened offensively as they shock off their loss to Boise State with a 31-28 win over Arizona State in its last outing.
RB Jacquizz Rodgers turned in his best performance of the season that included a pair of TDs and 145 yards in the win.
He will face a Wildcats’ defense that has carried Arizona’s offense for much of the season so far, ranking second in the FBS in total defense with 230.8 yards per game, while surrendering just three touchdowns – all to Iowa – this season.
Arizona QB Nick Foles made his debut last season in Corvallis, passing for 254 yards and three touchdowns. The junior has established himself as one of the elite quarterbacks in the Pac-10 this season, having thrown for 1,089 yards with six TDs and a conference-best 74 completion percentage.
He should wreck havoc on a Beavers defense that has been caught napping in two losses to ranked teams this season..

USC (4-1, 1-1) at No. 16 Stanford (4-1, 1-1), ABC, 8 p.m ET on ABC
This one could get ugly, and I’m not talking about the numbers on the scoreboard.
The Trojans were dissed by Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh in last year’s 55-21 loss to the Cardinals, but USC’s resentment is not for the its worse loss in 43 years, but for Harbaugh’s decision to go for a two-point conversion with 48-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Nevertheless, the Trojans will need to put the past behind them and focus on the issues at hand, cost them their first defeat of the season, falling to Washington 32-31 on a 32-yard field goal as time expired.
Meanwhile, the PAC-10’s most elite QB, Andrew Luck, also fell victim to his first loss as the Cardinal’s second half meltdown to the No. 4 Oregon Ducks ruined the team’s highest ranking (No. 9) since 1992.
Luck turned in another solid performance completing 29 of 46 for 241 yards and two scores in the loss, boasting his season totals to 15 touchdowns — 13 passing– while completing 62.8 percent of his throws.
Luck will likely have another strong outing against the Trojans who he threw for two TDs and ran for another against last season, as the Boys of Tory are ranked 116th in the nation against the pass, allowing 288.0 yards per game, and 99th in total defense.
USC will bring its own quiver of weapons led by quarterback Matt Barkley who has been impressive so far registering 12 TDs while laying claim to the Pac-10′s highest passer rating.
Stanford has lost its last four home games in the series by an average of 24.8 points.
Expect an epic battle as a little Stanford “Luck” gives them the edge in this one.

Arizona State (2-3, 0-2) at Washington (2-2, 1-0), FSN, 10 p.m EST
Heisman hopeful QB Jake Locker will look to lead his Huskies to back-to-back victories for the first time this season while the Arizona State Sun Devils tries to snap its three-game losing skid.
The Huskies lead the all-time series against Arizona State, 15-14, although ASU notched a 24-17 victory on a touchdown pass in the final seconds when these teams met last year. The Sun Devils are seeking a seventh straight victory against Washington.
ASU are coming off a heartbreaking 31-28 loss at Oregon State in and despite their win loss record have been rolling up huge chunks of offensive real estate while posting nearly 35 points per game.
Quarterback Stephen Threet remains the top passer in the Pac-10 and running back Deantre Lewis who has rushed three straight games over the century mark.
Meanwhile, Washington will hope is can ride the momentum they gained with a dramatic 32-31 win over No. 18 USC thanks to Erik Folk’s 32-yard field goal on the final play.
Locker has thrown seven touchdowns and only two interceptions so far this season.
His favorite target has been WR Jermaine Kearse, who has 107.5 receiving yards per game, tops among Pac-10 wideouts.
The Huskies running game is solid, as Chris Polk has amassed 356 rushing yards and three scores on 66 carries (5.4 ypc).
The Devils’ defense is suspect, which will give Locker plenty of time to operate in the pocket.
Offensively the Huskies match up with ASU, but I just don’t see the defense containing a blistering ASU offense.
