Finally after a long season we have the baseball playoffs, which in my opinion are second only to March Madness, because of the intensity of every moment. The Reds earned their way into this spot but now that they are here they have a herculean task – defeat the odds on favourite Phillies. In game 1 they are leading off with Edinson Volquez, this may shock some who see Bronson Arroyo’s 17 wins sitting there in the dugout but it is the smart move. Volquez hasn’t faced the Phils this year but it 2-0 lifetime and has the best stuff on the staff. The combination of unfamiliarity and skill could just be the ticket to stealing game 1 which any underdog must do. Volquez will need to be sharp because the starter in the opposite dugout is the likely NL Cy Young Award winner.
These two teams haven’t met since July which I am sure suited the Reds just fine. The Phillies took 5 of 7 games in the season series and shut them out the last two ball games. One of those shutout was courtesy of game 1 starter Roy Halladay who also shutout the Nationals in his last start of the season. It may be his playoff debut but I still expect that Halladay will make it hard for the Reds offense to get on track and as a result will set the tone for a series expected to be dominated by the Phillies. The Phillies have beaten the Reds every which way this season including two 1-0 shutouts and two games where they scored nine runs. I expect something in between for this series starter.
Prediction: Philadelphia takes game one in a dominant fashion. The Red are able to get on the scoreboard just once
Philadelphia is -200 and the O/U is 7
Score Prediction:
Philadelphia Phillies – 7
Cincinnati Reds – 1
