Pitching Probables: Ivan Nova vs. Matt Garza

The only thing still to be settled in the American League is who will win the East. These teams have two more games in this set at Tampa and 4 more games to play against each other in New York next week. So far Tampa has the edge in the series 7-5 including last nights amazing pitching duel. Tonight there should be more offense from both teams. Starter Ivan Nova is just a rookie and even though he he pitched well he doesn’t get very deep into games. The Yankees strength is their lineup, starting pitching and of course, Mariano Rivera. The middle relief situations created by pitchers like Nova force the Yankees to use players they would rather not. If Tampa can make him work every inning they might be able to expose the Yankees primary weakness.

On the other side Tampa has to feel good about that series opening win and we might all benefit if these two teams face each other in the playoffs next month. Matt Garza takes the hill tonight, the last time he faced these Yankees he struck out 9 over 7 innings while giving up 4 runs. He also took the loss. Garza has had an up and down season and hasn’t taken that next step many expected. He did pitch a no hitter but is just as likely to throw 100 pitches through 4 innings as do it again. His last start he was roughed up by the Red Sox but prior to that pitched four straight without giving up a run. Garza is 7-2 at home (10-3 team record) so betting against him tonight might not be the strongest play.

Prediction: Tampa is at home with the more experienced starter and coming off an emotional victory. This is one of those rare occasions to play against the Yankees…with confidence.
