2010 BYU Players to Watch: OT Matt Reynolds, WR/RS O’Neill Chambers, DB Andrew Rich, DB Brian Logan

2010 BYU Strengths:
BYU is deep in running backs, offensive linemen and in the secondary. The potential cornerstone of the program is in place with freshman quarterback Jake Heaps, but even if he doesn’t win the job right away, it appears the position will be In good hands.

2010 BYU Weaknesses:
A Quarterback battle can always be a distraction, and it’s a challenge for a true freshman to take a leadership role. The pass rush is unproven. Someone in the receiving corps has to step up to make up for the loss of TE Dennis Pitta.

2010 BYU Offense:

The Jake Heaps watch began long before national signing day. Widely ranked as the top quarterback in his class, Heaps finished high school early and enrolled at Brigham Young in midyear to get a head start in the weight room. All eyes were on him for spring ball, where he battled evenly with Riley Nelson, the former backup to graduated Max Hall. Returned missionary James Lark refused to let it become a two-man race. Heaps, from Issaquah, Wash., was courted nationally, but his LDS Church background steered him toward BYU. Mendenhall said the quarterback competition will be a difficult decision in the fall … but it would not be a reach to say Heaps will start at some point. Originally, it was expected that Harvey Unga, a 1,000-yard rusher in each of this first three seasons, would take some of the load off a new quarterback. But on the eve of the spring game, it was announced Unga had withdrawn from school because of an honor code violation. Not long after that, Mendenhall surprised reporters when he said Unga was trying to get back in school. The status of BYU’s all-time career rusher (3.455 yards) didn’t figure to be resolved until late summer. There’s plenty of depth at running back in returnees J.J. Di Luigi, Bryan Kariya and Joshua Quezada, another midyear freshman enrollee. The line returns four starters. The undisputed leader is junior left tackle Matt Reynolds, who is projected to go high in the 2011 NFL Draft if he comes out early.

2010 BYU Defense:

A rebuilding effort is in store as BYU has to replace linebackers Matt Baumann, Shawn Doman and Coleby Clawson. The other priority is replacing four-year starting defensive end Jan Jorgensen, the Mountain West’s all-time sack leader. Vic So’oto moves into Jorgensen’s position at left end. As a sophomore, Brandon Ogletree has the most experience at inside linebacker. Junior college transfer Aveni Leung-Wai, and true freshman Zac Stout, have a chance to contribute immediately. The secondary is led by second-team All-MWC cornerback Brian Logan.

2010 BYU Special Teams:

Senior Mitch Payne has been nothing but consistent, converting 10 of 14 field goal attempts in each of the past three seasons. Riley Stephenson returns as punter. Returner O’Neill Chambers was second in the MWC at 25.6 yards per kickoff return last season.

2010 BYU Predictions:

There are gaping holes on both sides after BYU’s 11-2 campaign in 2009. This season has all the markings of a rebuilding year in Provo, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be interesting. There’s little question Heaps is the quarterback of the future. It’s just a question of how soon the future arrives. The expectations take a dip this season after the loss of some key personnel, but if Heaps is as good as advertised, the team projections will soon be soaring.
