Pitching Probables: Edwin Jackson vs. Armando Galaraga

Most people thought the White Sox acquisition of Edwin Jackson was a poor one or perhaps unnecessary. He has his first chance to prove otherwise tonight. He tends to tease with his talent as exemplified by his no-hitter earlier this season – a game in which he struck out 8 but also walked six throwing a whopping 149 pitches. In every start since that game he has given up a minimum of four earned runs and it is that maddening inconsistency that has people questioning why Chicago would want him for the playoff push. On the positive side for Jackson he has never lost a start against Detroit. He is 2-0 for his career but I think those starts are from his Tampa year and a lot has changed in the Tigers lineup since.

Speaking of teasing performances how about Armando Galaraga? After his near perfecto his performances were getting steadily worse and worse until the Tigers actually sent him down to the minors. Upon his return he has been much better but he left his left start against Boston early after getting hit by a line drive. The young hurler has not had much luck against Chicago in his career, he is just 1-2 with an ERA of 4.78. Lucky for him this game is at Comerica Park where his numbers are much stronger. Even luckier would be if his teammates remember to bring the lumber tonight. They rocked Sox rookie Torres last night for 7 runs matching their highest total in the last 10 games.

The odds makers have the Detroit Tigers as a -1½ point favorite with a run total of 9.

Prediction: Detroit lives for another day by grabbing this important divisional game, roughing up Edwin Jackson in the process.
