Pitching Probables: Carlos Torres vs Jeremy Bonderman

This game is the second of a doubleheader and this series represents Detroit’s best chance to show that they intend to stay in the race through to the end. If Chicago wins the opener and wins game two they will be nine games ahead of the Tigers. To accommodate the scheduling the White Sox have called up rookie Carlos Torres to start. He has not pitched in the majors this year and his numbers from a cup of coffee last season were not impressive. For what it is worth he pitched one inning against the Tigers last year giving up a couple of hits but no runs. It is impossible to predict how he will do today and you might want to watch what happens in the earlier game to see what bullpen help he might have. Chicago will look to outscore the opposition in this one relying on an offense that is in the top ten in HRs(7) and steals (2). They have won three of four against the Tigers this year and may smell blood in the water.

Is it time to stick a fork in the Tigers? They have won only two of their last ten with a depleted roster and there is little hope on the horizon. One of those wins was in Jeremy Bonderman’s last start and on the mound may be the only place the Tigers have an advantage over the Sox with the relatively unknown Torres on the bump (no I have not forgotten about Miguel Cabrera). Bonderman has been given some extra rest heading into this one so he will have no excuse for not being as sharp as possible. Unfortunately for him and the Tigers, it isn’t 2006 anymore. Tigers are the slight favourite in this hard to predict battle (a stretch perhaps).

The odds makers have the Detroit Tigers as a -1½ favorite with a run total of 9.

Prediction: I like the White Sox to put the first nail in the Tigers 2010 coffin with a victory behind the rookie Torres and an offensive explosion.
