2009 Record: 2-10 WAC Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 9 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Mike Macintyre (San Jose State and overall: 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Tim Landis Defensive Coordinators: Kent Baer

2010 San Jose State Players to Watch: WR Marquis Avery, RB Lamon Muldrow, QB Jordan La Secla, DB Duke Ihenacho, DE Mohamed Marah, DB Tanner Burns

2010 San Jose State Strengths:
With 17 starters back from last year, and another three from 2008, the Spartans aren’t exactly starting from scratch. They have their returning quarterback, top rusher and four of their five best receivers, giving the new staff plenty to work with In Its debut season.

2010 San Jose State Weaknesses:
Anytime you put in new offensive, defensive and special teams schemes, there is alearning curve involved. That process began in the spring and will carry over into fall camp as everyone works hard to get on the same page. Three of the first four games are on the road with Alabama, Wisconsin and Utah.

2010 San Jose State Offense:

Rookie head coach Mike MacIntyre inherited nine returning starters on offense from retired Dick Tomey, including senior quarterback Jordan La Secla. He started the middle eight games of last season, completing 59.9 percent of his passes for 1,926 yards and 10 touchdowns. MacIntyre opened the quarterback position to competition in spring camp and said he wouldn’t name a starter until two weeks before the season opener at defending national champion Alabama. Freshman Dasmen Stewart and junior college transfer Matt Faulkner figure into the mix. MacIntyre has two talented running backs in senior Lamon Muldrow, who is the team’s top returning rusher with 592 yards and three touchdowns, and junior Brandon Rutley. MacIntyre also has two solid senior receivers in Marquis Avery and Jalal Beauchman, as well as sophomore tight end Ryan Otten, who scored two touchdowns in the spring game. Avery was second on the Spartans in receiving with 42 catches for 465 yards and six scores in only nine games. Beauchman caught 35 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns. The Spartans have three returning big men up front, including senior guard Isaac Leatiota, who has 30 starts. Perhaps the returning experience, combined with a potential burst of energy from a new coaching staff, will help the Spartans make at least minor improvement after ranking 118th nationally in scoring.

2010 San Jose State Defense:

Seven starters return to a unit that finished No. 109 in scoring defense, yielding 34.5 points per game. The defense will be led by first-team All-WAC safety Duke Ihenacho and senior defensive end Mohamed Marah. Marah lasted only one game in 2009 before going down with an injury, but he will playa big role in anchoring the front seven this season. Ihenacho has 187 tackles in 30 career starts. He also has six career interceptions and 16 pass breakups, giving San Jose State a solid hitter in the middle. Joining him in the defensive backfIeld is safety Tanner Burns, who fInished fIrst on the team in tackles with 96. He also had two picks. Defensive end Travis Johnson had two sacks last year and gives the Spartans another presence up front.

2010 San Jose State Special Teams:

Junior Tyler Cope hit 7 of 11 fIeld-goal attempts and needs to work on getting more depth on kickoffs. San Jose State was last in the WAC in kickoff coverage with only three touchbacks. The Spartans were also last in the league in kickoff returns – and No. 117 nationally – averaging 18.5 yards per attempt. There also is a big hole to fIll at punter. Philip Zavala averaged 42.2 yards last season.

2010 San Jose State Predictions:

This is a team caught in transition. As much as MacIntyre liked what he saw in the spring, he knows the Spartans need to make vast improvements on both sides of the football to be ready to play another difficult schedule. Making it back to .500 will be a tall order for San Jose State.
