Pitching Probables: Jaime Garcia vs Johan Santana
Much to my surprise Cardinals starter Adam Wainright got knocked around pretty good last night as the Mets offense finally showed some fight. But can they do it again against another stellar starting pitcher? Rookie Jaime Garcia has been just that and then some this year including 7 innings of 1 hit ball against the Mets in a no decision back in April. Yesterday I noted that Albert Pujols has really struggled against New York this year. Last night it happened again as an 0 for 5 day dropped his batting average below .300 for the season. Have the Mets really figured something out that the other teams haven’t.? Tonight might be a good indicator as staff ace Johan Santana takes the hill. Pujols is career .400 against Santana (6 for 15) including 2 homers. If he is going to be another ohfer it is going to be hard for St. Louis to win this evening.
Everything worked for the Mets last night. They got good starting pitching and got production from the usual suspects instead of having to rely on the unpredictable likes of Angel Pagan and Rod Barajas. The key thing is can they do it again as their problem all year long has been consistency. It helps to have ace Johan Santana on the mound. He is 2-0 career against St. Louis with a scant ERA of just over two. He was especially stingy back in April when he limited the Cards to 4 hits over 7 innings while striking out 9. The Mets cause would be helped if they could get David Wright back on track. After killing it in June this month is shaping up as his worst of the year. They need him to start contributing again because it doesn’t look like Beltran is going to give them much.
The odds makers have the New York Mets at –1-½ – favorites with a run total of 6 ½.
Prediction: Santana has been greatly and the Mets will start to build a little momentum with another solid victory.
